Bank Employees Reach into Own Jeans’ Pockets, Donate $20k
For years, Bippus State Bank employees have been wearing jeans on Fridays for a $2 donation. But they are not donating to their own “donut” or “party” fund; these employees have been raising money to give back in a big way. In November of 2006, BSB employee Dawn Downs was granted permission to start the program. Each Friday, the money is deposited into a “Jeans Fund” and used throughout the year to give back to the community. Fast forward 616 working Fridays and the total amount donated by the Huntington County branch employees has surpassed $20,000.
The funds are distributed to various organizations throughout their community but one that always receives their generous donations is LOVE INC. At Christmas time, they gift more than $800 worth of toys for their Toy Store and each August, over $500 goes towards purchasing clothing items for children, such as jeans and socks, which are then donated to their annual Back-to-School Fair. The fair is an opportunity for a number of local families to obtain school supplies and clothes for the upcoming school year. Some other organizations that have been graced by the generous hands of BSB employees include:
- Boxes to Afghanistan
- Blessings in a Backpack
- United Way of Huntington County
- Salvation Army’s Angel Tree
- Warren Food Pantry
- Cancer Services of Huntington County
“We have a lot of fun with this program. It is very rewarding to help others,” says Downs. Through the jeans fund, employees of Bippus State Bank are relaxing their dress code one day a week all while supporting their communities throughout the year.
